Winter Tree ID - workshop

Identifying trees in winter

Saturday 3rd February 2024 & Saturday 24th February 2024

10 – 1.30/2pm

A practical workshop focusing on winter identification skills for some of our native tree species (the types you are likely to come across in the English countryside). Some of the natural and cultural history associated with different trees will also be discussed.

Introduction to Garden Design

15th March 2024 10am-4pm

Learn about the rules & principles of design, and what lies behind a beautiful garden, with plentiful insights and tips to provide inspiration for your own garden.

Creating Greener Gardens

26th April 2024 10am-4pm

Our gardens have the potential to be both beautiful places and a home for nature. This course will explore ways to create more sustainable gardens.

Introduction to Planting Design

10th May 2024 10am-4pm

It is plants that usually ‘make or break’ a garden. Learn about the different types, their characteristics and how to use them to best effect.

Crude Honey BeeKeeping 6 Week Course for Beginners

This full introductory course at Crude Honey’s Production Hives, Set in the beautiful surroundings of Sheffield Botanical Gardens will provide you bucket loads of real ‘head in hive’ practical beekeeping experience, coupled with informative classroom-based learning at the wonderful Dorothy Fox Learning Centre.

Join Nick of Crude Honey, an experienced beekeeper and artisan honey producer, with a wealth of knowledge and passion about bees. Learn the art of natural and sustainable beekeeping through six unique sessions, taking you on a journey through the beekeeping year, functioning of the hive, beekeeping practices, and honey production; enabling you to become a confident beekeeper of your own hives.

The course is suitable for those ranging from interested/ complete beginners through to those wanting to brush up or improve skills and confidence.

One off ‘Bee experiences’ and more in depth/ advanced beekeeping courses are also available, so please contact Nick through Eventbrite for details.

ADULT HORTICULTURE LEVEL 2 COURSE WITH SHEFFIELD COLLEGE AT THE GARDENS

The Sheffield College's land based department will be working with Botanical Gardens to deliver a Level 2 Horticulture programme specifically for adults. This full-cost, 1 year course will run at the Botanical Gardens one day a week, with support and access to online materials throughout. This course is perfect for adults wanting to learning something new or upskill their green fingers with guidance from highly qualified teaching staff to gain a qualification accredited by City & Guilds. The majority of content is practical and will consist of small assessments that take place during the course delivery by the teaching team.

Course content includes:

  • Preparing the ground/area for planting

  • Planting out container for a seasonal display

  • Caring for a planted area

  • Planting a container for a seasonal display

  • Mowing turf using a pedestrian controlled mower

  • Laying out plants for planting

There are no formal entry requirements, however a keen interest in gardening and horticulture would be beneficial.

Students who successfully complete this qualification could progress on to:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Practical Horticulture

  • Level 2 Diploma in Environmental Conservation

Course fees

Please note that this is a full cost course - £2,225 per learner (ways to pay can be discussed with the College)

Tools will be provided but students may wish to bring their own gloves.
