New Planting in the Rock and Water Garden

Last week a new Cloud pruned Ilex crenata was planted on the top tier of the Rock and Water garden. Cloud pruning, also known as Niwaki, is a Japanese method for shaping or sculpting trees. Ilex crenata or Japanese holly is a slow growing evergreen shrub and it takes years of careful pruning to achieve a good shaped specimen. Head Gardener Andrea chose the cloud pruned Ilex as it complements the Japanese style planting that we are aiming for in the Rock and Water garden. See if you can spot the distinctive new planting there!

This project has been funded by the Sheffield Botanical Gardens Trust which receives generous donations from visitors, sponsors and especially the Friends of the Botanical Gardens Sheffield (FoBS). The Trust has awarded a grant of £9,500 to support five different projects within the gardens and will be featuring these in the news section as each one is completed.
