If you are free and want to continue with gardening or have never gardened then think about working in Sheffield Botanical Gardens. You do not need to have gardening experience. Some volunteers like to work on a particular area of the Garden whereas others move about and work on different areas each week.
The work is general gardening – digging, weeding, clearing up etc. General volunteering takes place on a Wednesday morning from 10.00am to 12.00.
Just turn up. Volunteering is supported jointly by the Council’s gardening team and the Friends of the Botanical Gardens. You don’t have to be a Friend or an expert gardener to get involved.
Come along just before 10am on Wednesday – approach from the Thompson Road gate, walk past the South Lodge and enter the “behind the scenes” gate next to the toilet block. The team will be in the large greenhouse. Tools are provided. There is no commitment to come every Wednesday. Wear appropriate clothing for the weather, including sturdy footwear and gardening gloves. You may wish to bring a flask and a snack for a short break around 11am.
If you cannot volunteer on a Wednesday there may be opportunities to garden at other times. New volunteers are always welcome.

During 2019 volunteers worked on Wednesday mornings clocking up an amazing total of 4448 hours.
FOBS’ members also carry out a variety of fundraising activities such as plant growing and selling at plant sales. There is a thriving section making and selling merchandising such as cards, tea towels and mugs. There are other volunteering opportunities such as taking Garden Tours, giving Garden talks and helping with the Children’s University activities.
