If you are free and want to continue with gardening or have never gardened then think about working in Sheffield Botanical Gardens. You do not need to have gardening experience. Some volunteers like to work on a particular area of the Garden whereas others move about and work on different areas each week.

The work is general gardening – digging, weeding, clearing up etc. General volunteering takes place on a Wednesday morning from 10.00am to 12.00.

Just turn up. Come along to the Gardens just before 10am on Wednesdays – approach from the Thompson Road gate, walk past the South Lodge and enter the “behind the scenes” gate next to the toilet block. The team will be in the large greenhouse. Tools are provided. There is no commitment to come every Wednesday. Wear appropriate clothing for the weather, including sturdy footwear and gardening gloves. You may wish to bring a flask and a snack for a short break around 11am.

During 2014 volunteers worked on 49 Wednesday mornings clocking up an amazing total of 2964 hours. Average attendance was 30 with 45 volunteers on the best day and 11 on the worst.

FOBS’ members carry out a variety of fundraising activities such as plant growing and selling at plant sales. There is a thriving section making and selling merchandising such as cards, tea towels and mugs. There are other volunteering opportunities such as helping with the Children’s University activities.
