KENNETH ENSURING THE GARDENS BLOSSOM

EXTRACT FROM THE SHEFFIELD TELEGRAPH 26TH NOVEMBER 2004

Kenneth Oldale was determined to dig that little bit deeper to ensure the restoration of the Botanical Gardens continues to blossom. While most people have been spending £20 to sponsor a single plant in the new rose garden, Kenneth has spent £280.

At 82, he has fond memories of the gardens, helping with restoration work on the Paxton pavilions in 1959.

"It's a very special place for me. You never know how long you have got left, but I wanted to do something before I clear off the face of the earth. I'm helping to beautify the gardens for the people of Sheffield and for anybody who can find the time to go and enjoy the roses. Hopefully they will provide colour and enjoyment for many years to come."

Kenneth, of Bellhouse Road, Firth Park, has been buying the sponsored roses for his friends, relatives and loved ones who have passed away.

"It's a lovely place for people looking for peace and quiet. People who need solitude find it a nice place to go and sit."

The Friends of the Botanical Gardens still need up to £60,000 to reach their target to match lottery funding.

"Sponsoring a rose would make an ideal Christmas present." Points out one of the appeal organisers, Meg Jullien.

More than 200 different varieties of roses are being placed in the new garden with a huge choice of colour, shape and scent. It costs £20 to sponsor a single rosebush. Phone Sue Willis-Worthington on 2686001, or call in at the gatehouse between 9.00.a.m. and 1.00.p.m. on weekdays.
