4th Annual Art in the Gardens |
|
As well as displays, many art demonstrations, including one by Joe Scarborough, added to the attractions. Crowds in their deckchairs enjoyed artistes such as Millers Music Hall, the Southey musical theatre and the Escafeld Brass band, pereforming on an open air stage. There was the usual visitation from the Victorians in their crinolines and top hats and the children’s village with a pirate theme and a treasure hunt for young pirates was a great success.

The weekend "ended on a poignant note" (Sheffield Telegraph, 7th September, 2007) Anne Barron, who has been involved in Art in the Gardens from the beginning, said her farewells before leaving for a new life in the Shetland Islands with partner Mike Bailey. Her experience and army of volunteers mustered from friends and contacts in the art community has been a major contributory factor to the continuing success of the event. Presentations were made to Anne by Howard Simpson on behalf of the Council and Trevor Neal, representing the artists. |

Howard said “We will never get another Anne Barron; she is an absolutely incredible person. I have never known somebody with so much energy and who is so personable. It will be impossible to replace her but I’m sure we will carry on as usual. Art in the Gardens involves a fantastic community of volunteers who love the idea of bringing art to the masses”. Art in the Gardens 2007 was organised by the Sheffield City Council in conjunction with Anne Barron and the Scottie Gallery, and was supported by the Rotary Club of Sheffield, Radio Sheffield and the Sheffield Telegraph. The event raised money for the Sheffield Botanical Gardens Trust and other local charities. |
