His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales marked the
spectacular restoration of Sheffield's Botanical Gardens Pavilions with an official opening on Monday 1 September.
His Royal Highness was given a tour of the Gardens and Pavilions, where he met members of the public, and
completed his visit by unveiling a plaque outside the East Pavilion.

During the visit His Royal Highness was introduced to key figures from organisations involved in the restoration of the Pavilions and Gardens, including financial donors, fundraisers, Council staff, and volunteers. He also met city dignitaries, including the Lord Mayor, Leader of the Council, and the Master Cutler.

The five-year, £6.68 million restoration of the Botanical Gardens includes the restoration of the unique, Grade II* listed Glass Pavilions, one of the UK's oldest existing curvilinear glasshouses, dating back to 1836. The Pavilions are the only UK example of curvilinear and ridge and furrow glasshouses joined together, providing a 90-metre long, south-facing spectacle with fully restored stonework. The pavilions were reopened to the public on 19 April 2003, Easter Saturday.

The restoration of the Gardens will include a number of themed areas in the 19-acre garden. Of the £6.68 million needed for the restoration work, more than £5 million has been provided the Heritage Lottery Fund. The remaining matched funding is being raised by the Sheffield Botanical Gardens Trust, the Friends of the Botanical Gardens, Sheffield City Council, and individual and corporate donors.
